Close to 380 million people in the world speak Spanish and come in third after 885 million mandarin speaking Chinese and 440 million people who speak English and countries where the official language is Spanish adds up to more than 20. There are more than 46 million students of Spanish worldwide and since the colonisation of the Americas the number of Spanish speaking people is increasing, furthermore the highest increase in bilingual people took place during the 20th century. Concerning the teaching of Spanish , traditionally we find it mostly in European countries, as Germany, Great Britain, Scandinavian countries, France and Italy, but for some years now the number of students coming from the "new" EU -countries, North America and Asia is growing. Of all Spanish cities, Málaga has the highest number of language students in fact 30.000 per year. |
